| Well,
finally, my car is back together. I will start my review of this Turbolocity
SN95 kit now.
The kit was
ordered back in February and took almost exactly 7 weeks to get to my front
door. Brad, sent the kit next day air on his own dime to make sure I got the kit
on the promised date. Overall look of the kit was good, packing was ok,
with one of the boxes kind of falling apart, but that’s typical UPS. In opening
the box all the parts were in good shape, the coating was good, and the turbo
was packed well. The intercooler was coated with some sort of Anti-Oxidant
coating that was removed with Mothers Aluminum polish. When we had the kit laid
out I noticed that there were two pipes missing, I immediately called Brad, he
was very upset, and sent me the missing pipes SATURDAY DELIVERY. I was very
impressed.
Day 1 - Header
installation (Friday Night)
Headers were nicely made, smooth welds, with bigger
than 1-5/8 primaries, all the welds were ground smooth, and the flanges were
nice and thick. In putting the headers on we noticed that we needed the header
bolts that were missing in the kit (brad offered to buy me a set or refund me
the money for another set). After purchasing the header bolts, we noticed that
some of the welds around the flanges were a little thick and proved to be tricky
to get the bolts into the flange, one tap of the hammer, and the bolts popped
in. Header install complete, with only some wrap on the passenger side A/C line.
Header install Perfect.
Day 2 - Main kit
install (Saturday)
Started the day
by installing the Front mount intercooler, T line for the oil feed. Every nut
and bolt was provided in the kit and we used every one, including the T and
braided lines.. The Intercooler is sheet metal and 3 core. Installation proved
to be a two person job, one to hold the intercooler and another to mount it and
line it straight. For the Cobra, you have a power steering cooler that needed to
be relocated; we found it best to tuck it under the radiator support with minor
bending to the lines, perfect fit! Ring at the door, my Pop, brought me two
pipes that were delivered by UPS Saturday delivery, I got my pipes just as Brad
promised.
Once the
intercooler was installed, we went ahead and cut the fender well out to make
room for intercooler to intake piping. Easily cut with a die grinder,
and if done right, can look factory made. After that was complete we had started
back with the crossover pipe from the header to the main 3" pipe. This was a
little tricky, and things to remember are to never tighten bolts until
everything is lined up. We put both pipes in and loosely tightened the V-band
clamp system (works awesome!)
Next
we installed the Turbo and waste gate. Turbo was a little tight, and if I were
to do it again, I would install the turbo onto the flange then install it in the
car. The piping for the waste gate and down pipe didn't line up very well, but
with a pry bar everything lines up! Now somebody really needs to slap TIAL
around. After we installed the down pipe and waste gate, we decided to tighten
the bolts that go into the waste gate, Well, Tial, being so smart, sent us
Stainless bolts to screw into the stainless housing. The bolts bound up, and
both of them broke in the waste gate. Not fun, 4 hours later, and two new bolts,
we had to take the system off drill the new holes, and put the system back
together. That was a total PITA. Note to anybody putting this system on, drill
out the threads on the waste gate and just use two bolts and nuts, SO MUCH
EASIER!
Day 3 - Finishing
up (Sunday)
This was a
crazy day. We got alot done after the whole broken bolt fiasco. We got the
intercooler piping installed and found one pipe to be a bit too
short. We welded on an extension to the pipe and that was finished. We
then decided to drill and tap the hole in the oil pan for the drain feedback
from the turbo. As hard as I thought this was going to be, it was pretty easy.
Brad provided the stainless line and all the fittings, nice and easy!! We
modified the lower radiator hose with the pipe that was provided, simple cut and
install.
Note: I told Brad about the fact that we needed
to extend the intercooler pipe and he made a fix immediately, there will be no
need for any welding when you get this kit, it was just something that we caught
and made Brad aware of.
After the engine
compartment install was done, we proceeded to install the H-pipe that comes with
the kit. The pipe is pretty neat, installs with one V-band clamp and then hooks
up to your catback. We installed this pipe in about 10 mins, awesome, and easy
to run open exhaust at the track too.
Installed the JMS chip
that I opted for in the kit, and plugged the ECU back in.
Moment of truth, we
triple checked everything, and then I got in the car and turned the key. Fired
up first try. NO EXHAUST LEAKS! Unreal. The car started we ran it through a heat
cycle on the lift, I even hit the two step really quick so we could hear the
turbo spool. Music to my ears! We killed the car then buttoned her
up.
Summary:
Awesome kit
for the money. Brad is an awesome person with a great upbeat personality. He
needs to figure out a realistic timeframe for his kits to be shipped, but other
than that, I have no other complaints. I would like to thank the people that
helped make this project possible.
