rear mount turbo.
« on: January 08, 2008, 12:32:55 AM »

i have a 95 lightning. i was wondering if you guys could kind of give me a idea on what size turbo i need. i have a mp-70 with a .68ar for it. i am planning on using a set of bbk shorties for a truck and a bassani off-road x-pipe for the piping on the hotside for the rear mount. as of now the motor is hurt but im planning on going back with a 351-357 with a set of ported gt-40x heads,tfs-r with a box upper. i am looking into cams now also but my old set up with a vortech i was running a stock 5.0 cam advanced 2*. any help or info you guys have on the build i would like to hear.

if you are running a rear mount that turbo should be fine if you wer doing an engine bay mount I would say go .96 housing... as for the camshaft... a custom grind unit is nice but there are a lot of guys on here running an F cam and producing 750+ horsepower with a similar combo. hope it helps buddy

you shouldnt need a X pipe with a single. You just need a stock style exhaust setup and you can put the turbo where the muffler is or at the rear your choice

I have a turbo lightning with the turbo in the engine bay.  You are fine with the MP-70 and the small A/R for a rear mount.  Once you get it tuned if you want a little more top end and there is heat to warant a larger turbine housing try it then.  What you have is fine for now.  I ran high 12's with a PTE67, p trim .81 A/R turbine housing.  I have since moved up to a PT74GTSH with a .96A/R and it is a tiny bit laggy  http://videos.streetfire.net/video/dc27db40-5cf0-4a39-8414-99b80010f810.htm    a 1.0-1.2 A/R turbine housing on a P-trin(MP-70) with a rear mount will be a bit laggy, with the turbo under the hood it will be fine.

Boosted88coupe,   thanks, I was trying to show johnnynumber5 that there is some lag on a large t-4 based turbo, even when it is under the hood with a .96A/R turbine housing.  I even powerbraked on the line with a 2800 stall converter.  I dont want anyone to misdirect him especially if he is looking to do a remote mount turbo.  I am looking to freshen up the bottom end of that truck, I have a wet plug, valve seal or rings,  and it sounds like crickets around 4psi, headgasket, stock bottom end and it has been boosted for 30k.  Hopefully it is just a valve seal which contaminated the cylinder and decreased the octane enough to detonate the cylinder and now the headgasket is blown.  Wishfull thinking I know.  If it is dead...time for forged pistons and rods.

Not at the moment.  The turbo consists of Mostosport shortie stainless headers, Silverstate Motorsports uppipe and bracket.  This bracket attaches on the drivers side of the A/C Compressor.  I built the downpipe, and cold piping.   The exhaust splits from the 3" downpipe into a stock location Borla cat back. I am using a 2001 Powerstroke intercooler.  The only other piece that needs to be moved is the Oil filter and cooler.  But after moving the cooler and filter it is easier to change the oil now compared to when it was stock.  I will try to get you a picture this evening.

Headers, Turbonetics racegate, Oil filter relocation kit, Hot pipes to the turbo and downpipe cost $2,500.00.  Since I build my own turbo kits.  I had to change my downpipe as it was originally designed for a on-center turbine housing and I wanted to use the Precision S thurbine wheel, which is only avalable with a tangenial housing.
