Dustin, As mentioned in an earlier post...your frame is very thin. I understand you did that for tire clearance, have you done anything to shore it up afterwards? Is there something you could show is in a picture that would help is to understand better how this thing launches without tearing the back of the car off with the frame rails? This is constructive questioning designed to learn something new that I might not know, not ment to be otherwise. Thanks.

The roll cage is tied into the spring mounts which also supports where the upper control arm fastens to the frame. Everything to the rear of this is simply holding the bumper and parachute mount so it doesn't have to take the abuse of launching a car.

I would say he just notched the frame and they plated it back in with 1/8" steel plate. Then as you can see in the pic he has a round tube running from either side at the nothc point. Thats pretty much how all the Mustangs frame are notched for mini-tubs. Plenty strong.

What I wonder is, what is it about some of the GM cars that they're so damn heavy? Or are people just not willing to get aggressive at getting weight out of them?

Your right. I plated the notched area with 1/8 plate to add strength back to the area.

These GM cars are full framed so you can't install any sort of K-member. They are not built anything like a Mustang, everything about them is heavy...doors, fenders. My car was not built to compete in this sort of racing. When I started it a few years ago it was meant to be a high 8 second car that I could still cruise around. It went 8.30's at 167 with a mild set-up and I cruised it on weekends. It has Corbeau seats (lighter but still not very light), still has all stock brakes and control arms on the front, full interior, heavy ass 9 inch rear, stock rear bumper. They can be brought down to around 3300-3350. My problem is that it takes a lot of money. Aluminum block, control arms and brakes. Once the nose weight is down you could do a lighter rear end, glass bumper etc. Even selling off my parts your still talking between 3-4k which is hard to come up with on a single income and a wife and 2 kids to feed. I'll do it as I can, control arms and brakes are first on my list. Once I have to go 25.5 next winter I'll go to lighter seats and try to be more aggressive with taking the weight out. These G-bodies will never be able to be as light as a Mustang though.

Dustin,

The car looks great.  I was watching the videos and had a question.  Was the left rear tire rubbing on the big end?  It looked to me like it was slightly rubbing and making the car drift to the left.  Either way, congrats on some great numbers.

Chris

I was worried about that too. I watched the videos during staging and you could see some smoke coming from the rear bumper area. I have an air pan under the rear of the car to keep air pressure from building up between the rear end and bumper area. It would build enough pressure to push upwards on the rear bumper fillers and crack them against the bumper. The only gap in the pan is on the drivers side where the fuel line comes through so the smoke from the burnout builds up between the pan and floor pan and then comes out going down track.

Congrats Dustin.  See that cam isn't so bad after all, LOL... Two Thumbs Up!

Cam works great Don Oohyah! Not to mention is sounds bad ass in the video. Considering the combo is no where near optimum for 1/4 the #'s it ran made me Cheers! With the right gear, a/r swap and more boost ( I never raised gate pressure) there's no doubt it'd go 190 at this weight.

That is bad fast. Looks like a stocker too!!! How are your IAT's with that cooler anyway and what waterpump and size of lines do you use? I have that same cooler that i will use on a 402 ci LS2 with a 101mm.

End of run were 123 degrees. The pump is too small for 1/4 racing. It's a 500gph bilge pump with 1/2 lines. It needs a 2000gph pump and more line. IAT's are only 90 degrees at the 1/8th.

What spline axles do you use in the 9 inch and is it a spool or are you still running a posi? I know the biggest spline you can still run with a differential is a 33 spline along with a Detroit locker. My firebird is in need of an upgrade since i only have Dutchman 31 splines and a true-trac posi and the fact that i may have to run a spool and ruin my streeet manners aint making me very happy.
Somebody needs to step up and make 35 spline posi's since 1000 hp street cars are starting to be so commonplace these days. Grin

A good set of Strange 33 splines should be plenty strong for 1000hp if you really want to stick to a posi unit.

I figure that should bve plenty too except i hate Detroit lockers and thats the only unit that will accept a 33 spline axle. I guess if i have no choice thats what im gonna do. I also wonder about the possibility of a locker and a transbrake causing the car to launch crooked since it has no preload on it to guarantee it stays locked on the initial hit. huh

Awww man! I got a chubby after watching that video. That is just awesome! I was reading an old Super Chevy magazine from 1991 last night and all the tube chassis full on race cars were running mid to high 9's. Boy haven't we come a long way! Oh and they were all painted turquoise and pink with hideous graphics too. Grin
What are those guys doing when they push some button at the back of the car? Is it a datalog reset or something?
