The Banana - 1995 Mustang GT
« on: May 20, 2008, 10:48:03 PM »

WARNING THIS IS AN EXTREMELY LONG AND DETAILED POST. BE PREPARED TO SIT HERE AND CLICK STUFF FOR A WHILE

Well several of you have asked about a build thread on this car and here it is... I have a bunch of pictures and videos that I will post at the end. I'll just run through the specifics of the car and some brief history.

First off the car is a 1995 Mustang GT with 32k original miles. I am the second owner of the car and have pretty much tore this thing down to nothing several times. It started out its life as a daily driver and was quickly converted to a road race car in Germany (as you will see by some of the suspension parts that are STILL on the car). Upon returning to the states, the whole road race theme was ditched in favor of a drag race setup. Before too long the car had a A4 block  347ci motor with a F2 procharger. Fun nonetheless but still lacking something. This is where the turbo build begins...

Began by pulling the A4 higher compression motor out:

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk268/boostedgt95/Banana/motor003.jpg

Replaced it with a R-Block 331ci motor consisting of a custom stroke Cola Billet crank, Crower billet rods, and Ross custom pistons.

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk268/boostedgt95/Banana/mockup002.jpg

Mounted my $140 Ebay intercooler which has been the most cost-efficient purchase on this project

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk268/boostedgt95/Banana/intercooler004.jpg

With the intercooler mounted, turbo/transmission in place it was ready to have the turbo kit fabricated up by Brooks Lopez (Turbostang on here). Here are a few pictures of the kit fab work: (I wish there were more but Brooks removed them from his server Sad )

Here is a picture of car shortly after getting it back from Brooks' with the GT-42 76mm turbo:

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk268/boostedgt95/Banana/95gt1.jpg

Next on the list was to head on over to the dyno (HPP Racing) and get the tune on the car. Video:
http://s25.photobucket.com/albums/c73/Pewter_SS/?action=view&current=Picture008.flv

The car ended up putting down 834hp and 723 ft lbs tq:
http://www.qwplayers.org/crp/mustang8.jpg

Shortly after that visit, I decided to head to the track and get some passes under my belt. Here is where the project takes a huge step backwards and is actually put on hold for many months. On the first pass out of the box the motor decided to give out right at the end of the track. The car ended up going a 6.19 @ 104. Here are the pics of the EXPENSIVE carnage:
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk268/boostedgt95/Banana/kaboom001.jpg
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk268/boostedgt95/Banana/kaboom003.jpg
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk268/boostedgt95/Banana/kaboom005.jpg
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk268/boostedgt95/Banana/kaboom009.jpg
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk268/boostedgt95/Banana/kaboom010.jpg
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk268/boostedgt95/Banana/kaboom011.jpg

After this little mishap it took me MANY months figure out what to do. I finally decided it was time to ditch the custom 331ci and go with my current motor setup which is a 347ci Eagle off the shelf 4340 crank and rods. JE off the shelf 8.5.1 pistons. So next time I blow up I will not be waiting 8 weeks for 2 rods and end up paying $600 for them.  Fuck Fuck!

The rest of this thread is just a bunch of pictures and specifications. Some before/after pics as well...

Great build, seems like its gone through many changes.  I've always wondered what she packed after watching numerous 1320 videos.  Im glad to see you running the same I/C as me.  At least I now its good for some mid 5's. Two Thumbs Up!

Inproper thrust bearing clearance was my guess. Finally the crank pushed forward enough to put the rod/crank in a bind.  Doh!

We change the ramp on the boost controller and take some clicks out of the shocks/struts. That is the only changes done.
