New to Turbos and have stock 351w combo idea with questions?
« on: September 29, 2008, 02:33:42 PM »

I am looking to make no more than 500 rwhp with a stock 1978 351W, stock crank, stock rods and stock oval dish pistons. I am just trying to get into the turbo game with this setup The engine is bored .040 and a remanufactured block. I brought the engine this way. The heads are E5tE heads. I want a street friendly 5500 rpms or so. My 347 is at 7200 and rough idling car. So I need something nice and smooth running.

Here are my plans and am looking for advice/input on combo:

Converting to roller cam, thinking about a TFS Stage 1 or E303? I have FMS link-bar lifters (Have from 347 NA motor).
New pushrods once I get to measure for a new one.
New .550" lift valve spring kit
Romac SFI Balancer 28 oz
SFI 28 oz balance flywheel (Have Tremec 3550) with Anderson High Rev clutch
Trick Flow R series with 351 R Lower, 90mm opening (Have from 347 motor)
Accufab 90mm Throttlebody
38# Delphi Injectors, make the stock fuel rails work.
255lph High Pressure fuel pump
Accufab adjustable fuel pressure regulator
80mm C&L MAFS with 38# sample tube
Change gears from 4.56 to 3.27

Looking at the ponydown Stage 2 kit or similar. The Ponydown kits seems to use a C&L type meter.
Is the MPT70 good enough to achieve this power level

Not sure on the following:

Using stock roller rockers if you can call them that?
Trick Flow R Intake
90mm Throttlebody
Anderson Clutch (Had slipping with 347 doing 2nd gear burnout with about 430rwhp)
Cam selection.

Looking for feedback and see if the goals are attainable before I start.
My other goal is to run in the 10's in the 1/4 mile. My car is setup for that now, 8pt, PA racing Kmember, coil overs front, 33spline, spool, baseline suspensions stage 2 kit, M/T 28x11.5 ET streets on back and skinnies in front.

Thanks.

for a motor that size a master power will be a bit undersized but if you are only buzzing to 5100 to 5500 then you are ok but it will become a restriction and the top end for the bigger motor.....i have just been through this on my blow through......everything else sound pretty mild so yea go for it just remember the timing! oh and the fuel!....and 500 ponys should be obtainable. good luck

What size tubo would be ideal for this? I thought with the stock components I have and with the MPT70 .96 ar housing might be better. I don't know though.

mpt70 might be a little small even with the larger exh housing....however you do have shitty flowing stock heads.... It'd be a fun street car, lots of power down low, but prob run out of steam up top.  It's up to you, you could get the new mpt76 and just run that low boost and have one turbo that will allow you to grow, or have something that might be too small down the rd.  Either way those 38# injectors won't cut it..... you'll need 60's at min.

When you say running out of steam on the top, are we talking the 5500 rpm I am looking for or much lower?

It seems like it would be a huge jump in price from a mpt70 to a mpt76. With the ponydown kit, I can get $500 towards one, how much is a MPT76. Found it VSRacing has some now for $675+Shipping. I might go this route. Seems like a better Turbo, I don't want to sell myself short on turbo sizing to start with.

Thanks.

If you have the Mp-70 Use it.  The turbine side is small for a 351@5500 rpm and 500hp.  If you are using the R heads, intake and 90mm throttle body get a S400 turbo, and have fun keeping it below 5500rpm.  I would use stock heads with any P, Q or S-trim turbine.  Dont use the R intake on small heads or 5500 rpm 351.   I would not go over a 75mm throttle body for anything making 500 hp.  A 90mm throttle body and corresponding intake will be a pain in the rear on the street with limited response and a touchy throttle.  Get a Q or a S-trim turbo, anything smaller will choke the engine at 5500, the P-trim MP-70 or 76 on a 351 will act as a rev limiter and will be easy to keep it below 5500 rpm.

I use the E-303 in my turbo 351 lightning.  I like it and it is making 500hp.  Dont be afraid to try the F-303.  I went from a p-trim turbo, PT67 to a s-trim turbo, 74GTS and it made a world of difference in the top end power.  75mm throttle body stock gt-40 intake.  3" tubing matched up to a 75mm throttle body quite nice.   Edelbrock performer heads. Hope this helps.

I don't have the turbo kit yet. But would the mp76 work or is that still a p-trim?

Also, do you have any vids or sound clips of the lightning with the e303 cam. I was also considering that cam.

I would hate to sell the Trick Flow R upper and 90mm throttlebody. I have it now on a 347 NA and it works great, awesome throttle response. I know using the stock 351 E5TE heads will hurt, but I might replace them with something aluminum before the combo is complete.

Any recommendations to a Q or S-trim turbo for about $650-$700 range?

Thanks for your input.

I can't wait to get started on the project and move over the builds section. I just want to make sure that I have something that will work for now.

As far as sound clips of the truck I only have a 1/4 mile pass see the link below.  This idle is lumpy and the people at the DMV always laugh and swear I will fail emissions.  I always pass.  I picked up my 74GTS off Ebay for 500 used.  Sold my PT67 for 550.  The MP76 is still a p-trim turbo I would assume it would make a more power but the exhaust wheel is still small.  Keep an eye on the classifieds for a Q or a S trim turbo.  Also S300 and S400 sieries turbo's from Borg Warner.  If the TFS-R intake/90mm throttlebody worked keep using it.
