T6 S480 with a small block......Who's running one?
« on: November 05, 2008, 07:13:29 PM »

What kind of results are you guys with under 355ci and a T6 S480 getting?  I have a 347 and a S480 with the 1.32 housing and wonder about spool rpms and power levels under 7000rpm's.

Any experiences shared would be greatly appreciated.  Pics too!!!

Thanks guys

BigTurboNotch, what is your personal experience with that turbo?  I am thinking about a 75mm with that turbine and trying to separate the good info from what is repeated from unreliable sources.

How long does it take to get on boost?  What rpm with a 2 step?  Do you have video of staging the car?  I am worried about being one of those cars that sits there after the light goes green trying to build boost.

Me too.  I'm hearing mixed reviews.  I also have the 6000 ft above sea level problem to tackle.

Is that the T6 or T4 too?

6700rpms in the 1/4 with a glide, 3.73's and 28" tire?  Cool.

Forever because I have a converter that is Intended for an 598 ci alcohol injected bbc that made close to 1200 N/A on the dyno.  I was driving through the cheapy XHD 10 inch converters that a few companies offer.  Put this in and the car started flying.  It goes to 2700 on the trans brake at 0 boost and has to work its way up.   i have not tried a Two step yet,  I've been more concerned wiith tuning down track,  so i leave flat to the wood and launch at about 4 psi, it takes .5 seconds after the break releases to make it to 16.5psi which is about 4400 rpm.  I have video but it doesn't show much,  it'll be posted in the response below.

What was the ET on your 139 mph run?

Rather not say, but here is video of a 137mph run,  so you can conclude what you want from it.

1.32 T6 housing.

yeah the 6700 is only because i'm RPM limited by the Hyd lifters and the light valvespring pressure needed to run the hyd stuff.

Can't see the vid at work but the nombers don't sound bad.  .5 seconds to hit 16psi from 4psi sounds violent.  Did you split the exhaust or run it all into a single collector and use an undivided flange?

Thanks fior the inputs.  More would be appreciated.

First off for all the guys that say that turbine housing is too big, you need to get a amaller housing on that thing,  Yea it is big, and they dont make a smaller housing for the 96mm turbine wheel in the s400.  I do however have a custom turbine housing that equates to .83 for the 96mm wheel.  I am not using that housing because it was a little restrictive for my top end.  I am running a s400-88 with the old 7 blade 88mm garrett comp wheel.  I love the top end.  It does take some time to spool with a 8:1 comp 306 spooling it.  Yes I should have used a larger crank/higher comp pistons, but it is built and I love it.  My full weight 92 lx has gone 138.9mph in the 1/4 on 20psi.  The key to using this turbo on a smaller CI engine is the converter.  One that is loose enough to allow the engine to come up on the converter but tight enough where it holds the power once it comes up.  My 2 step is set to 4700rpm and it makes 15-18psi at that rpm depending how hard the engine is hitting the 2 step.  It takes 3-4 seconds to build that boost, faster with the 3 step.  I shift @ 7k and cross the traps @ 7k.  If I had a tighter converter which it needs now I would be crossing at a lower rpm 6500ish.  The top end of this turbo is second to none on a small CID engine.  I have tried the 82mm turbine s-400 and it did not help the spool that much and did not have nearly the top end.

There you go Dave. Both those examples would go solid 10.8 @ 128 in Denver.

I see.  I remember someone posted your car here but he stated it was yours.

I think I can closely match the performance of the 306 at this altitude with less weight, more cubes and more track oriented setup.  I do need to swap my cam and converter for sure.  I'd be giving some up at, and before the 60ft but it's a softer takeoff for less spin.  I still have options if this doesn't work.

Gen1SVE,  I sent you a PM.  Interested in that modded housing.

Thanks for the inputs.  I'd surely welcome any other real world results.

Its a t6 I think its a 85 mm turbine wheel. I ran out of fuel pump that trip to the track but I have meth on it now and my af is looking alot better. I am trying to get it on the dyno Monday night. If I do I can give you some nubers. They wont be to high as I still have a stock block.
