Anyone running a S400 1.32 T6 flange on a 302 or 306ci combo?
« on: December 20, 2008, 12:53:21 PM »

The prices on these turbos are hard to beat.  Im getting close to purchasing one and wanted alittle feedback before I go on.  Anyone have a S400 1.32 T6 flange on a small cubic inch motor?  Where does it see full spool? Thanks for sharing

I'm going with the S480 using the 1.32 housing on a 347 but I'm going solid roller so I can use the RPM's and power the turbo will utilize up top.  One guy on here is running a 306 with a similar turbo and same size housing here in the site.  I'm sure he'll chime in.

I feel I'm on the small end engine size with these turbo's.  I personally wouldn't try it with anything smaller.  If so, I'd go with the T4 flange setup and the .96 housing or the 1.10 (or smaller if possible) T6 housing.  That's a smaller turbine too then.  More costly but better suited in my mind.  then again, I'm trying it for the cost, why can't you?

More experienced and knowledgeable guys will surely chime in.  Go off the real world results that guys post to determine if it'll work for you.

haven't run at the track with mine yet but my 331 makes about 5lbs on the footbrake with a 2-step and jumped to 15lbs real quick after launch....quick enough that it blew off the slicks and I had to let off before mowing lawns with it!

That's surely comforting.  What RPM's were you seeing this 5psi at?  Is that the .96mm turbine setup with T6 housing?

Great real world testimony there.

3000 rpm on the 2-step

my turbine housing is 1.32a/r t6 with the 96 trim turbine wheel

this is also thru an air/water intercooler mounted over the rear axle fed with 3" tubing

Roozterdvx, what some other details of your combo?   Heads? Cam?  I'm impressed a 1.32 T6 spools this soon on a 331 . . .

Thanks,

Thanks,

AFR 205 heads, out of the box
Cam, 9 year old Turbo People grind, never got any numbers on it, bought it from them when I bought my first turbo kit...original Cartech outlaw kit with Turbonetics t76 and air/air cooler
Accel DFI, gen6 originally tuned by Job Jr, had Job clean up the tune about 4 years ago due to moving from the northeast to Florida
I now do my own tuning on the gen6
160# Ford injectors
302 truck EFI lower, ported and gasket matched by me, custom sheetmetal upper intake made by me
th400 tranny, full manual forward pattern valvebody, no transbrake...built by me
TCI torque convertor, 3000 stall, 3800-4000 flash, nothing special about it...figured I'd change it when it craps out but it's still kickin!
8.8 rear with 3.55's, Moser spool/axles, and Wilwood disk brakes...single caliper
Weldon 2025 pump
Turbonetics Racegate 44mm wastegate

oh, almost forgot...65mm Ford Racing throttle body...some don't believe and other may criticize, but throttle response is killer

boost readings are taken in the upper intake after all the tubing and intercooler, not at the turbo outlet which would show a higher number, and throttle is NOT to the floor....it pushes thru the brakes and smokes the tires

one other thing...boost doesn't take forever and a day to start building...about 3 seconds and the needle is around 5psi

I think that's everything...

That's an awesome real life testimony.  Do you have any vids of the car launching and running?

Good to hear you're still on the Gen 6.  I have one in the basement that I'm considering using on a 351 based 408 in my 63.5 Galaxie with an S480.

I run a 306, S488 with the 1.32 A/R.  My mistake was building the engine with 8:1 compression.  Any how it is still working well for me.  I would not trade it for a smaller turbo.

You still haven't sold that housing yet have you?  I went ahead and got a solid roller setup so i can use the turbo at it's upper range as well as other reasons so i might not need it but you never know.

Are you saying you wish you went higher in compression?

yup 8.5-9.0 compression ratio would have been much better.

sorry no vids of the car launcing but I'll see what I can do.
Planning on hitting the dyno after the new year to finalize the new tune so I can get my ass back to the track!

one more thing...compression ratio is on my motor is around 8.2-1
If I were building this motor today...I'd set up for around 9.2-1 instead. This motor is old...these were the first AFR 205 heads shipped to New england...and at that time, everybody built low comp turbo motors. The tuning has come along way and with better intercoolers, more agressive compression and timing can be used.

Where do you see full spool?  How much boost on that pass?  Was it the same tune as the 738rwhp @ 25psi?  140mph seems pretty low for your dyno numbers.

The gate opens around 5500 rpm that pass was 18-20psi.  I am killing the converter and any additional boost just puts it on the rev limiter.

no power numbers or et's on the new set-up yet...been doing some street testing
I'll be heading to the dyno as soon as I can recover some $$$ from the holidays to finalize the new tune

as far as rpm capability on my intake....my previous combo was shifted at 7500
biggest problem with factory efi base manifolds is the front runner on each side. i had to build up around some of the runners by welding to be able to open the ports for good cross sectional volume and to improve the "line of sight" to the head port.
fro the upper intake, I've tried a few different variations/shapes until this one.

A better converter should be a night and day difference.
