Rear mounted turbos
« on: January 20, 2009, 08:43:52 PM »

What type of turbo would you use for a rear mount? The motor will be 426 cu in small block W-2 heads 904 trans and approx 3450 lbs "street car". Looking to get about 1000 flywheel horsepwer. Is there any ar ratio that works better for rear mount? What flange t4 or t6? Sorry for all the questions switching from nitrous and want to get some parts for the turbo build going.

Something in the 88mm range with a t4 flange should get you to the 1000 hp range on that size engine and still spool well.  I'm personally running a ST80mm from forcedinductions with the 83mm turbine and a 1.00 a/r on a 370 cu in LS1 and maknig right around 900 crank HP at 16psi.  I'm pretty much maxxed out on my exhaust side though due to back pressure.  I am currently having the turbo upgraded to a 1.25 a/r, race cover and 87mm turbine to see how it works.  The key to having a rear mount work well is to keep as much heat in the exhaust as possible.  Coated manifolds and wrapped exhaust to the turbo work wonders.

If you are looking for more power you will probably have to step up to a 91mm to but you will of course pay the penalty of lag.

If you are worried about spoolup here is a video of my car with a vigilante 2800 converter.  Getting the right converter will make or break your setup.

I now have a PTC converter that is around 3600 and the car spools about twice as fast on the transbrake.  It is also tighter driving around than the vigilante 2800.  I don't know what Dusty specs out when he does a turbo converter, but he nailed my setup on the first shot.

I'm not thinking it is all that worth it. Mike murrilo even put his back up front and i think he had twin 101 or 91.
