I don't think trying to MIG weld without a shielding gas would look even that good. It looks to me like it's been welded with flux-core wire.

regular flux core does not look that bad, i did my whole kit flux-cored.

Sorry, I thought we were talking about the welds on the header flange. I'm not talking about all the cold welds; I'm talking about all the spatter. When gas coverage is lost during MIG welding, the weld itself gets porous and nasty. There is a small amount of spatter but not as much spatter as those headers have up by the flange. The goofy part is that many of the welds out on the primary joints are MIG welds with good gas coverage, just not the enough heat. Perhaps a stick welder was used on the flange joints because someone couldn't get enough heat with a MIG welder.
