93GT Dart 347/C4/S480 build (Now running!!!)
« on: February 12, 2009, 10:01:17 PM »

OK,
I've been in the build phase of this car for awhile.  Last year I was close to having it done.  I was running a YS trim Vortech that i never even got to try on the car due to surgery.  I sold the blower to pay for 2 replacement cervical discs but my insurance screwed up and covered the entire non FDA approved procedure.  Way to go TriCare.
Pic of my disc.  I have 2 of these in C4/C5 and C5/C6

I recovered, got the car running N/A and drove it like this for awhile with a PMS and an RPM intake.  You can see the big hole I had for the power pipe.  Oh well.

I drove it for about 150-200 miles at best.  If that even, and sold the MAF, injectors, headers and intake.  I decided I'll hit this turbo thing again since I had a smaller (T70) setup I was trying to build before.  I got me an S480 here and started to gather parts.

Here are a few pics of the car through some of the phases to where it is today.

The motor is a Dart Sportsman 8.2 deck with forged 347 stuff in it, ported Vr Jr heads, Vr Sr EFI intake and I have an elbow on the way with 70mm TB.  I have a Camshaft Innovations solid roller in it and plan to spin it to 7500ish.  I now have 72# injectors but will more than likely have to upgrade.  It's all controlled with a BS3.  I have an almost fully rollerized C5 with C4 guts and a 4000 stall.  I have 3.73's now but there are a set of 3.27's on the shelf.  I run 31 spline Mosers with 275/60/15's on 10's with 6.5bs.  My fuel tank is sumped and I run wtwin Walbro's into a single -10 feed with a -6 return.  I'd like to up that to -8 someday.  I was running solid motor mounts that I chopped and lowered the motor but I figured I was going to mount the turbo to the frame so I'd like to keep everything still as I can.  I went with a skinny kid front and mid plate setup but still have a tranny crossmember with poly mount for added support back there.

You can see where I'm at now with the turbo.  I made a mount and welded it to the frame.  My turbo sits exactly where it is in the pics but i have to move my intercooler and radiator forward so i can fit that honking 5" DP in.  I considered a 2 pass radiator so i could have the hoses on the same side but I found a way to make the tubing where it wouldn't interfere with the lower hose.  The DP still is too close for comfort so I'm moving the radiator and intercooler.

I'm working the crossover tubes now but had to put it on hold for another project I'm working on.  I take about an hour here and there to keep up the motivation on it.

I figured it's about time I posted it on here so maybe i could get some constructive criticism here and maybe some good ideas.

I'll post more as I go but it'll be a bit slow at first while i work this other car project for someone else.

Dave

Mike, I don't want anyone to laugh at my skinny little arms.  Plus, I might ge tit stuck in there and beat myself up trying to get it out.  You have E-mail.  I got a bit done on your car.  Headed out to get more parts today.

Mike, I'd say the same about a build thread for you but you'd have about 5 threads going since you can't keep a car for longer than 3 months.  That's even when you aren't even in the country!!!  My car's a pit right now.  Hopefully I'll get Mikes car done soon enough and try to get mine going again. ..........For good!!!!

Little progress today. I have been swapping projects back and fourth between my car and the RX7. I got the turbo mount done and have just enough room under it where the -12 drain will fit....barely. You can see the crossover is comming together slowly. I still have to merge the two sides and get the WG mount installed. I don't knwo about using a flex pipe in the crossover. What do you guys think? Is thermal expansion bad  enough to do some damage with mild steel? I know nothings going to move anywhere.

I hope to have the merger done this weekend and start to work on pushing the radiator and Intercooler  forward to fit the 5" DP.

Our kit is set up almost the same way but we just have solid motor mounts. Cars been on the road for about a year with no problems. Looks great!!

Gave us the mush needed room and works well enough to run the a/c in florida.

Thanks john.  I followed your build from the T70.  I wish your old lady could talk my wife into the hobby.

I thought you had a 4" DP?

Thanks

I know.  I used to have 3 Fox's with 3 more cars of my own.  2 of the Fox's were originally 4 bangers too and I swapped them.  I've consolidated to this one only and still can't keep up.  Kids will do that.

I have a 63.5 Galaxie as well as a 63 Impala with a 5.3 both patiently waiting a build of their own.  It'll never end.

I finished up the crossover.  Not too happy with my welds but that's what I get for building the merger from the headers to the flange and not the other way around.  I had to fill some gaps.  It all is nice and smooth inside though and sealed up nice.  I'll try it without a flex pipe in it for now.  It's not a street car but will see some miles while I try to tune the BS3.  Then I'll get it on the track and see how it does.  If it's all sealed up nicely, I'll send the pipes out to coat.  Now to get busy on the DP and find where I'll put the WG.  It's going to go from the merger and back into the DP even though I'm not running a muffler.....for now.  We'll see how it sounds.

Got some of the down pipe done.  I think it's too close to the pulley.  What do you think?  I might just turn it and run it out in front of the drivers wheel instead.  This way I can bring it up about 2 inches to clear the lower radiator support and then angle down.  I like it all tucked up in the car rather than hanging low.  This pipe is not light either so I could save a few pounds getting rid of some of it.

TriCare screwed up and realized it later on.  I told them they'd only get the discs back when I'm dead.

No room for the waste gate down low so it'll have to be right behind the turbo up top.  I'm going to route the DP under the drivers fender instead.  The lower radiator hose fits fine in there too.

Thanks guys.  Yes, it is.  I got it in Ensinada when we were on a cruise.  I used to get them all the time when we were down there surfing on the weekends.  I had to get another one.  It's going to hell welding with it on but the garage is cold when it's snowing outside.  I have 2 projects going on out there and need to keep warm somehow.

Those wooden blocks are pretty good pipe-holders Wink

Looking great!  Thank god you have a turbo mount, or that pipe would be crushed!  lol

You didn't notice I have yours sitting on blocks the same way?  If I only had some 3" pipe and Vband.  Then I could get back to work on the other project welder I'll have your oil lines and turbo mount done this week.  Then it's just on to the DP and wastegate.  You'll be on the road before me.

Yeah i noticed it for my car as well, that's why i pointed the blocks out.

I'll get that v-band to you either today or tomorrow, if the shop still has them in stock.

In fear of hijacking a thread, your car looks great!  I forgot, are you going to mini-tub it?

Eventually I'll swap the seats.  I need it running now so I can utilize the BS3 knowledge here because when I'm in ND in 1.5 years, I'll be lost with it.  I'm going to get some Kirkeys and I'll tie them into my 10 point when I build it.  Money is key and having 3 kids on E-7 pay isn't cutting it.

Little update with all I have going on lately.

I got the WG pipe welded in.   Cutting the hole in the merger was a pain in the ass.  The welds are tough to cut through.

Next is to get the turbo back in, try and move the lower portion of the radiator and the entire intercooler forward some so the fan will fit.  If that doesn't do it, I'll go for some slimmer twin fans or something else.  Then I can get back to the down pipe and weld the WG dump into it as well as my wide band fittings.  I still haven't ordered an elbow because I'm still tettering on the fence as to which will fit under the hood but also clear the valve covers and rails with the throttle cable.

More to come.....
