Housing questions
« on: April 08, 2009, 04:14:37 AM »

Hello everyone, I have a few questions about housings. I am going to be doing a JY twin setup on my mustang and have some questions about housing swapping. I can find the .60-.48 T3 garretts all over but the .60-.63 are really what I’m looking for. Are there any cost effective ways to change the hotsides out for a .63? There are a few ebay garrett clones that have a .63 hotside, would these swap or am I just going to have to find the housings elsewhere?

This is my first turbo project and would also like to ask how the turbos will work with the smaller housing, I am guessing that it will spool quickly but roughly what rpm will it run out of steam at? The car will not see over 5500 RPM and was just wondering if the .48 would rev that far effectively. I have been searching for most questions and finding what I need, but these I could not find a definitive answer for. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The motor will be a stock 91 H.O. with fresh bearings and rings. I also have a f303 that might find its way in, if nothing else for the sound  Grin . I am saving for  getting a t56 to put in, man they hard to come by reasonably priced, at least where I'm at they are. Onenastybird you have a PM about those housings  Two Thumbs Up!

IMHO, with the stock heads/intake the .48's would be a better choice.  The f303 cam (while it may sound good) will likely kill your power...again, if you are using the stock heads/intake.

I had thought that my .48's were the main cause of power drop-off with my combo at 5000rpm...but now I'm not so sure.  It appears I was losing 4psi of boost through a loose coupler since the beginning of my install....basically over-spinning the turbo's trying to produce 8psi (when the gates were actually set for 12psi).  I still expect a drop-off at 5500rpm or so...but it shouldn't be as dramatic as I was seeing before.

Millhouse that is exactly what I was looking for, someone that was running a set of .48's. What RPM do the turbo's come in? I am running P heads with explorer intake and frequently cruise at 2500+ RPM. From what I have been reading as long as I am not in it the turbo's really don't run at cruising speed correct? The car is not being built to run the 1/4, I much prefer to run a few miles and see what they got if you know what I mean  Wink

Well, I thought they used to come on pretty quick....until I fixed my boost leak.  Now it's just insane!!!  I have VERY little lag with my setup.  If I recall, I reached full boost by 2800 rpm back when I was loosing 4psi.  I'd say now it's likely in the 2500rpm range.

As for cruising, don't worry about it.  As long as you don't accelerate to hard, you won't be making any boost.

Here is an old dyno of my setup.  You can see how everything starts tailing off at 5000rpm.
