turbo V6
« on: July 18, 2009, 10:08:17 PM » |

I have a chevy 4.3 V6, and I am considering turboing it. but I can't find info on how to size the turbo (or turbos) to the motor. I want to build it as a fun DD motor for a 68' chevy truck, any reccomendations?

look up what turbo they used on typhoons and Syclones since they use a 4.3 also.

I'll answer this question as generically as it was asked. Use a meduim sized turbo.

let me rephrase my question a little bit, I have a 1968 chevy pickup that needs an engine. I also have a 1997 chevy astro van with a low miles 4.3 that I'm parting out, so what I'm really asking, is what can I do with a stock shortblock (cam swap at most), I'm not looking to make 1000 hp, I just want something fun I can drive regularly. the truck is a swb stepside, 2wd auto.
Please bear with me, I am very new to turbos, if there are thinngs I need to specify that I haven't already, please let me know!
Thanks
-Eric

Supernatural Turbo

The Syclone and Typhoon came with a Mitsubishi TD06 turbocharger...quite small actually but we upgrade them. They're good turbos, but not cheap.
I recommend going with regular Garrett turbo for the application. I suggest the venerable "P-trim/60-1" which will respond very well and also capable of going well into the 400+hp range.

That thread is definately useful, but I have a question about turbo headers, does it matter if the primary tubes are equal length? I've seen so many pics of turbo headers that are way far from equal length primary tubes(or even more of a log style manifold). If I go for it with the truck, I'll have plenty of room to make headers that are closer to equal length primary, but if it's not worth it then i'm not going to do it. Thanks for all the help so far! -Eric

do you guys think it would be better for me to go with a single turbo, or go twin turbo, which I should have room for in the engine bay on the truck.

http://www.syty.net/forums/index.phpTons of info there, lots of questions about swaps have been answered there in the 10 years I have been a member. Stock compression and pistons in a non SyTy 4.3 are going to be a weak link, but under 400hp has been doable in $100 junkyard Vortec engines. Stock SyTy exhaust manifolds don't really work well with the newer accessories, but you can bolt them up to a Vortec headed motor no problem and use any T3 style turbo. Stock SyTy turbos have gone low 12s in 3750 pound Syclones, something around 360hp.
