A thumping through the intake?   I dont know if this is your problem or not, but typically a diesel is very noisy through the intake system. This is why OEM's stick restrictive intake systems on them, to quiet them down.  When you open up the intake, you also open up the door for noise... On a turbocharged diesel you dont often hear it unless it's idling, after that the turbo drowns it out, and the intake pulses smooth out when it's got positive pressure..   Take the tube off the air cleaner, start the truck and see if it sounds the same, I'll bet it does...

I've never ran my 7.3 or 6.0 without the air cleaner hooked up, never needed to. I'm a diesel/transport refrigeration tech, the engines we use are non turbo 4 cyl Kubota's, take the air cleaner out of those, and the intake noise is twice as loud as whats coming through the exhaust.
