Also had oil seeping out of the breathers where they're pressed together.

If your going to use the Moroso breather with the electric pump , you will want to JB weld the area where they are pressed together .  And around the nipple .

You will also want to seal the other valve cover when running the electric pump .   If everything is sealed up right it should sound like this :

http://s151.photobucket.com/albums/s152/cedoz/?action=view&current=vacuum-Clip002.flv

when I shut the motor down it had pressure in the crankcase. I'm guessing it's working the wrong way.

Check balls are probably bad .    I had the same problem running the Moroso set up .

I did some experimenting w/ stock ford smog pumps a while ago. My old combo was being shifted at 7500 and I paid no mind to pump speed. Pump worked great, just ran it too fast. I'm trying a pump from an 80s Escort now, w/a Moroso pulley to slow it down. The GZ Motorsport  pumps are reworked Ford ones w/ vanes that are oil resistant.

I made up the brackets from crap I had laying around:

Don't think I'm going to find a cobra in a local yard, need some more info on the Lincolns:)  That's something I can test right there in the yard with my little battery.

Breathers just have something that looks like wadded up stainless mesh in the top and the bottom has what looks like a separator. Would the check ball be in the part that screws into the downpipe? I might try pulling it off and hooking the tube to the downpipe directly until I can come across another check valve. That piece is hard to blow thru going either direction.

Check balls are in the part at the down pipe .   If there is no check ball , or if they are hooked up without them , it will pressurize the crank case and you will probably have oil everywhere .

^Those check balls blow out all the time. I went through 2 in each header before I made the switch to the electric pump...no issues from then on.

Grrr... Figures something would be wrong with it. I'm getting oil everywhere right now as it is. I might drop by the 2nd hand shop again and see if I can pick me up another one for $5. Sould it freely flow in 1 direction when you blow into it? This one would barely flow 1 way but I had to blow pretty damn hard to get the air to move.

Thanks for the tip.  I am going to give an Escort pump a try.  It would have to reliably pull more vacuum than an electric pump.

Maybe I'm just lucky but ......   I've used this pump for 3 years . It comes on with keyed 12volts and has run constantly for 25,000 miles .

I even bought a spare because I was afraid it wouldnt last ....................... its still on the shelf .

Just remember to take the foam out of it .

Funny, I did exactly the same thing.  I use the 96-98 Cobra pump running backwards.

Like others I get 4-5 inches.

It's been in the car running full time for almost 4 years now.  I too have a spare and have never had to use it.

Heck, I was thinking of slapping a boost a pump on it and see how much vacuum I get then!

It seems to keep up just fine.  Car has been running almost 4 years and has no blowby or oil leaks yet.

Thanks,

Ed

Blown385 and Ed Clark, do you have the motor sealed or do you run a breather or a valve or something on the other valve cover? I'm thinking of putting an electric pump on my Dart and then running it constantly too.

I found that is has to be sealed .  The pump will suck oil if it isnt ............... at least in my case it did .

Blown385 and Ed Clark, do you have the motor sealed or do you run a breather or a valve or something on the other valve cover? I'm thinking of putting an electric pump on my Dart and then running it constantly too.

Sorry I missed this.  I started with a sealed motor.  But when I tested for vacuum on the opposite side of the engine I only saw about 1-1.5 inches of vaccum.  Pretty much worthless.  I was also getting a fair amount of condensation and a small "vapor" leak on the timing cover I recently found.  Like this there was never anything but water in the catch can and almost no vapor out the breather on the catch can.

So as a test I removed the seal I had on the driver's side cam cover and put a small "Ricer" type filter on it.  I can now clearly hear air passing thru the engine and much more vapor coming out of the breather on the catch can when the engine is hot.

Another thing I did was I took a spare boost a pump and hooked it to the vacuum pump.  With the seal on the engine I was getting about 4, maybe 4.5 inches of vacuum on the engine at idle.  I'm currently running it with the filter back on and the motor not sealed. I'm not as much worried about vacuum on the rings as I am keeping pressure down.

Not much to hooking it up.  Just 12 volts for juice and I used some NPT to AN adapters into a couple of short 3/4 hose that was already on the pump.  Then Tapped the passenger side cam cover for the same size An fitting.  I think I used -12 to the pump mounted behind the glove box on the firewall then back to the engine bay to the catch can.  Seems to work okay so far.  And I have been running this pump on all the time for almost 4 years.  Still the same pump.  No issues.

Thanks,

Ed

Can you explain more on this? I don't understand what you mean with a boost a pump and how/where you connected it.

It raises the voltage so the pump runs faster .
