Can I rebuild an hx50 myself?
« on: November 17, 2009, 11:11:18 AM »

Hey guys, I am wondering if with no experience doing this before can I take apart and rebuild an hx50 myself with basic tools?  I am looking at one of the rebuild kits on ebay.  Will a rebuild fix side to side shaft play?  Note I do have the hx50 service manual.

we had a holset hx35w that was pushing oil out of the exhaust side. we picked up a genuine holset rebuild kit off ebay for about 90 bucks. we found the seal on the exhaust side was carboned up and frozen in place and we believe that was the cause of it pushing oil. we took it all apart, thoroughly cleaned it, and reassembled it with the new journal bearings, thrust plate, and seals. works great. we had no prior expierience rebuilding turbos. the kit did suggest rebalancing the wheels, but they seemed like they were in exceptionally good shape, plus we were in a hurry, so we just put it back together. got about 1000 miles on it so far

If the parts are component balanced you can disassemble them and put them back together with no balance issue. A good way to tell is look at the compressor nut, if it has machine marks where its been cut, its most likely balanced as an assembly.

How much side to side play do you have? Some side to side it normal, make sure it isnt hitting the housing. Its the in and out play thats bad.

the nut was slightly ground on one side. although we didnt measure them, all the tolerances seemed ok. the old bearings were in excellent shape as well...it was just burning oil.

Well the turbo is on the way so I will have to further inspect it when I recieve it.  It was described as very slight side to side play so i do not think it will be too bad, but I would like to rebuild it anyways.  If I rebuild it with a rebuild kit will that fix any side to side play?

The new bearings will fix the side to side as long as the shaft is good. A dry turbo will have some side play becuase the oil tightens up the movement between the shaft and bearings if it was tight there would be no room for the oil in the bearings.

K cool, thats what I've been hearing, I just need to make sure its not hitting.

Holset's are pretty easy to rebuild, I've rebuilt a few without any issues. I was told the compressor wheel and the turbine are balanced seperately so it's not as crucial if they line up exactly the same afterwards.

That unfortunately is not true. They are dual planed balanced component level, but for proper balance its crucial to assembly balance as a rotor group.

We build and modify Holsets here. The HSS line of compressor wheels are due out in Dec this year. We will have a complete line of their new Billet wheels.

So I should get it balanced after i rebuild it?

Quick question how freely should the turbo spin?  I just got the turbo in today and there is no rough spots in the spin, it spins freely but if I give it a turn itll probably do half a turn, it just seems like it could benefit from having the bearings replaced.

I'd ike to rebuild it myself, can I just bring the wheels to a turbo shop to have them balance it?

the kit we got from ebay was a genuine holset rebuild kit. the seller will balance the wheels for free, you pay shipping. i dont have a link to the seller, im sure if you find the genuine holset kits on ebay, you'll find that seller.

Well I figured out that I have an H2E not an HX50.  There is only one kit listed on ebay to rebuild this turbo doesnt list my part number on there.  The seller says that some H2E turbo use bigger shafts and bearings which are HX50 parts.  I have been calling holset dealers all day long and cannot contact anyone.  I am hoping they are just closed for the weekend, I dont care if I have to get it from holset I just hope I can find a kit for this turbo.
