C6 Transmission Question?????
« on: March 02, 2010, 07:34:17 PM »

Hi all: This may be a question for any tranny rebuilders here.  I have a c6 that is in my 5000 LB 59' wagon it is from a 73 Lincoln and has a long output shaft.  I have had many shops build this tranny with no luck. It has had problems in the past with eating the bearing surface down on the 1'st/ reverse planetary. This build is lucky to have 500 miles on it and the planetary is all eaten up again.  The fluid is not burnt and the clutches still have the part numbers on the faces of the plates. I was wondering if anyone here might know what would be eating up the planetary????  It is a 6 pin steel planet.  Not the cheap 3 pin aluminum one.   Any ideas????   I can post pics soon of the bad part.  Thanks for any help.  I am freshening up this trans. before I put my new 557 twin turbo motor.

Tom.

I think you may need to upgrade the thrust washers to torringtons.  http://www.fordmuscle.com/forums/c4-transmissions/475922-c6-full-roller-buildup.html

It has roller bearing washers front and rear of the drum now...  I am going to the tranny shop I know and they are getting me some replacement parts like the teflon sealing rings and a new planetary. They already gave me a o-ring and gasket kit for it. They also put new seals and checked the check ball on the drum with all the springs because I don't have the press to take the snap ring off with. So far all for free....  I will try to get some pics up soon....  This will be the third planetary it has eaten....  But only on the bearing surface????

There is not much love for the C6 on this site.  Are you a member at 460ford.com?  There are some sharp C6 guys there.  There is good info on valve bodies too.

Here are some pics of the planet hub.  I just bought new parts today but will be inspecting everything with the oiling of this part.... The third pic shows the depth if the groove the best.  also I see some wear on the end of the output shaft where the input shaft was touching it. Looks to be some good pressure there to make the wear???  Are those shafts supposed to touch???  I Also found there was no snap ring holding the  govrener in place but that should have let the output shaft walk out????    It also was to have a 2.5 in. wide band in it and it didnt????  I hate tranny shops.......

Yes that is lack of lube I drill a .20 in the forward drum it will squirt more fluid right there to add more lube to the planet Two Thumbs Up!

Do you have pics of that, rdakota?  I see a C6 in my future and would like to build it once.

There are 3 oil supply holes in the hub that start at the beginning of the splines. It looks to be oil fed from the output shaft?  But is the input shaft supposed to be touching the output shaft???  There is wear on both shafts like they rub each other pretty good.

Any thoughts???

Sorry for the late reply no the two shafts are not sopost to touch,on the forward drum there is a cup plug the bearing covers some of it you can drill it and will add more lube to the planetary I do this to E40D's in 4x4s and C6.

I think because the two shafts touch each other it stops oil flow to the planet oil holes.  No oil flow can get there if they touch right????

Yes it will it get it's oil from the out put shaft put if you drill the hole it will give it extra oil when you get it back in remove the rear cooler line start it up and see how much fluid you get in 20 seconds you should get atleast a quart if you get more then ok.

I will check that...  Thanks for the info.  I have the motor all back in again.  I am waiting on my tranny guy to show up tomorrow to put it all back together.  I hope to learn all about building these by myself and will keep a spare on hand for easy swap outs.  I can have it out and back in in about 50 min.  But it helps to have a home lift...  He He.

P.S. Thats not me in the pic. it is my brother....
