anybody have pics of stock 351w and 302 oil pan side by side?
« on: March 13, 2010, 07:37:16 PM »

Well Im thinking of swapping a 69 351w(i found one locally) into my datsun. The mount is custom so I MIGHT not need order that oil pan kit. However I wanted to see if I need new oil pan or not to mount the 351w before I decide wether or not I should go down that road.

I cant get a picture on it cuz its running now but heres what it looks like basically(before i finished it)

If you look at these two pics you can see that all I have is a bar that runs under the oil pan. WHICH has plently of space from the pan to the crossmember/motormount.

heres what my mounts looks like.

and heres is the motor mount im using,

The 351 pan should have the same external dimesions but won't fit becaue the rear main cap is larger on the 351.

Pan rails are wider  due to the rear main seal

The rear main seal is much larger on a 351W, due to increased main bearing size. This results in the need for a unique 351W pan. If your Ranger is setup to use a 302 with a mustang double hump pan, you could get a 351W mustang swap DH pan.

It's a datsun not a ranger.
I know it won't work if it's a mustang but my car is niether set up for 302 or 351. The only thing I set it up with is motor mounts in which the 302 and 351 are interchangable.

My question is let say on a mustang where does the 351w pan hit? Does it hit on the mount or k member or elsewhere?

Yeah I know that you have a datsun - I lifted the quote from a ranger site...  The mounts are identical for a 302 and 351 so it should not hit any where around the mounts...

Take some measurements and then I will compare the measurements to mine and let you know...

If you bought the custom crossmember, try calling the manufacturer to ask which oil pan they intended to be used.  Based on your pictures, it looks like you could easily use a rear sump pan.  Also, that crossmember looks like it can be moved a little so you have some flexibility in the installation.  If so, you'll probably want to move it toward the back as far as you can to obtain best weight distribution.

I got it off someone local who makes them. It's basic design that would allow a 302.

And yes I have moved it back as far as it allowed me to. I already hammered the firewall abit to move it past the firewall about an inch.
