DIY turbo filter screen.........
« on: February 22, 2005, 05:32:56 PM »

I recently got a 4" filter screen from Kerry for my PT-74 which he now owns Grin  but he says that he can't get 5" screens.  The 4" supported the HP and TQ that you see in my signature so I just had to try and come up with something for my new 88mm turbo that has a 5" inlet.  I went to Lowes and bought a roll of wire mesh screen door sreen and a 5" plumbers rubber boot that came with a clamp and here are the end results of the screen.  You can make the screen filters from 3" all the way up to the 5", just get the correct rubber piece and tighten it down good and you're set.

Yeah I use it on the street.  No problems at all.

Kerry sells the molded versions over in the classified section.  I used one of those on my PT-74 and again, no problems.

I couldn't find a 4" rubber piece that fit over my turbo, where'd you find that 5" one?  Actually maybe I had the rubber piece fit but it was so thick that my clamp wouldn't go over the rubber piece.

You could double them and put a peice of cloth inbetween them...  that would be ok, wouldn't it? Just to keep some of the dust out.

Dan, if you go to Lowes or Home Depot, go to the plumbing section where all the big PVC pipe and hose fitting stuff is kept.  There is where I found the 4" to 5" reducer rubber boot.  I just cut off the 5" section from the boot and that is what you see in the picture.  They also had 3" as well and even 2".

They also have smaller mesh screen for the guys that want a smaller mesh.

That is exactly the rubber piece I used, its a Fernco fitting.  Hmm.. Maybe my T-Bolt clamp just didn't expand enough.

Hell, you had chicken wire on there too! Grin How about chicken wire, screen and then pantyhose over that. Anyone who is paranoid about getting something bad in the turbo could put a condom over that too I guess, might hurt flow just a tad. Wink

maybe fishnet stockings too?  Grin

Yes, I had the chicken wire, it was there first for strength... that way the turbo cannot suck in the mesh screen.  Then I put a layer of mesh, and then another layer of mesh angled over the 1st layer.

Now I am using just a plain ole' clamp.  You wouldn't need a T-bolt clamp for this though..

Great DIY Info Brent.

I ran an uglier version on mine at the track.
I'll try to get a pic.
Lowe's 4-5.5" sheetmetal adaptor (Heating/ventilation section)
Lowe's Std Clamp 4-5" and 5-6"
Chicken wire.

Kinda ugly compared to yours but functional.
Screen door mesh is better.  Somehow you MUST make sure the mesh can never enter the inlet.  I think the rubber fernco will accomplish that.
