First off.....I can vouch that a cone filter lets ALL the noise through just fine!  Grin

Secondly....changing to a screen to make "more noise" is just plain stupid  Pissed!

If the baldwin 2818 (9"x18" with a 4" inlet) would fit in the fender I would run it, my powerstroke has one on it.

t-bolt clamp
4"silicone hose
4"steel tubing (junkyard)
stainless screen (junkyard)
the steel pipe goes inside the silicone hose to support the clamp.
I cut the pipe half the length of the hose to leave enough to clamp on the turbo end.
I cut a 12" diameter piece of screen and formed the pleats over an old oil filter Cool
then just clamped it over the silicone. I had to add some fuel so they must work better than the K&Ns that were on it

I was at Lowes last night....They have everything you need. I even saw the rubber boots with twin clamps on them for like $6 Then walk over to the hardware department for the screen material. I would suggest using some silicone around the edges of the screen wire to prevent it from wanting to unravel or get sucked into the inlet, Then clamping it under the rubber boot.

I bought a section of aluminum tubing that epands from like 3' to 8' feet and I dont have room for my filter at the turbo....but over in the fenderwell I do...The tubing is fairly heavy and its made for dryer venting...I really dont think it will try to suck it shut or anything like that. Then Im gluing the tubing into a piece of plastic that comes with it to prevent crushing, then attaching the filter where its in the cooler air.

I put something inside the area that the mesh goes.. if you don't there is a good chance the screen will suck into the turbine.  Silicone will eventually fail IMO.

also the aluminum expander stuff is a no-no.  Even at 5" it will fatigue and fail.  Trust me I know as that is what happened right before I crashed my blower the first time.  95 degree day... Black car, BBC...  the alumitube sucked closed like a beer can after a romp on my way to the dyno...   I had to remove it...  ala allowing the dyno operator to drop a magnetic pickup through my blower/engine at speed...

k & n filters ok... put a screen on it at the track...
keeps bugs and stuff from going into turbo @ 190 mph...
also keep small children from getting sucked into turbo , while warming up  pre race.. Grin

We have been conducting some test on several cars using back to back dyno runs using alot of different filters, on both a 346 Supercharged car and a Turbo Honda.

What we have found has been pretty surprising so far...some results are not what you would think!

Quote

Green Line - 2 Window Screens on a 45 to one another. This gave us the lowest boost and the least power.

Middle Red - Stock ATI Little filter for an 04 GTO (Very limited room)

Purple Line - One Window Screen. Little bit more boost then the stock filter, with minimal gains for the safety given up.

Top Red Line - No filter at all...The most boost and most power.

This is a picture of the stock air filter and the two screens. We have a MUCH larger air filter we will be installing some time next week and we will report the results.

I should note, the car is an 04 GTO with a mild cam, P1SC, LTs, Full Exhaust and other supporting mods.

Quote
In this test, we used a Turbo B16...50trim, AEM, custom ramhorn A/C manifold.

Bottom Red Line - Red fluffy K&N filter with a LARGE wire backing. Lowest HP <225hp

Lower Red Line - Window Screen 271hp

Blue Line - NO Filter 278hp

Green Line - AEM Dry Flow Intake 280hp

These are the three filters used in this test...The AEM Dry Flow on the left, Window Screen in the center and K&N on the right.

Anyone have any track times or dyno runs of back to back filters?

We are interested in learning more and gathering more data.

I am trying this set up on my turbo, large hole wire screen with filter foam sandwiched between another large hole screen. This is for large frame turbo, pics as soon as I get it going.

I made a scrfeen out of 3/32'' hole expanded metal.looked good and I thought it wouldnt hinder power. On 13psi it seemed fine.tried turning up the boost and it wouldnt make anymore boost or power.Took the cover off and the boost shot up to 17 and picked up big power.

well duh Doh!.  This screen material that I used was aluminum and NEVER came off after numerous 30+ psi of boost pulls.  I would expect the plastic to melt and destort with a hot ass turbo Stupid.  LMAO!
