DIY BG CUSTOM TURBO Longtube twin build
« on: March 06, 2005, 08:26:35 PM »

Well, I finall got started on the buildup this weekend.

Let me first say that the headers are of excellent quality (thanks Brian).  I did however have a problem with the fitment of the drivers side header.  With the power steering mounted in the stock location (with a/c), the header would not go in due to an interference between the header and the p/s fiitting.  Now for me, this really is not a issue...because I have already removed all of my a/c equipment except the compressor.  I'll be getting a a/c delete kit...so the problem will be no longer.

The drivers side downpipe has so far consumed almost all of a 2 1/2" mandrel bend with a 5" radius...save for one leg and a small amount of bend.  I have virtually no scrap for this either, as I will probably be able to find a use for the excess.

Also, I'm buying a smaller radius j-bend to trasition to my o/r h-pipe location...which is of the variety for shorty headers (stock mounting).  I'll be able to attach the drivers side using the stock location, but the passenger will require me to cut a portion of the h-pipe out to relocate the flange...as it will be impossible to connect any dowpipe to the current configuration
Alrighty, on to the pics.

Skip to page 4 for re-linked pics and updates!

Another thing worth mentioning is the fact that I have a 99 v6 brake booster.  Real estate is definatley in short supply to get to the h-pipes on the drivers side...but it's do-able.

i'm gonna love seeing these buildups...
Brian seems to make a GREAT product.  I just wish I had more time to weld frame stuff together and get a motor in my car!
Logged

Things i've learned so far...
1) Keep zip ties handy.
2) Keep accessories off until turbo and headers are on.
3) Buy many grinder cutting discs and lots of welding rods.

Hmm.  I can see it.

I wonder if it has anything to do with it being linked to my ftp site.

Lol, I'm not sure.  It's been a bit tricky so far due to the poximity of the larger break booster.  I have no idea how much the materials are going to cost me.

The whole downside of this project is I have to do all of this work up at my folks house (I live in an apartment).  Seeing as they live 3-4 hours away, my process is currently slow at best:(.

All I can do for now is keep up to date pics with how much material of what I'm using.

BTW, I take it the pictures are fine???

Well, I've completed the drivers side header, and only have to weld the flange to the passengers.

Drivers Downpipe

Pass Dowpipe

I had planned on having somewhat short downpipes.  It didnt take long to come to the realization that it was not happening.  Space is at an aboslute minimum...so there is no room for flanges.   Hell, there is barely any room for the downpipes.

dude...

dont leave it like that..

Weld a 2.5" VBAND on each one a few inches after the turbo.

I suggest you also weld in 02 bungs somewhere close to the turbo... about 6-8" from turbo exit.

Your 02's are going to be way too far for a proper reading.. you will run pig rich forever without moving the 02's closer.

Lol, yeah…I plan on putting some O2 bungs around 8" from the turbo outlet.  I was just showing the overall shape.  They are by no means 100% done…yet (perhaps I should change my wording;)) .  I'm leaving the stock bungs in for wideband placement.

As far as the VBAND clamps go…I'll probably end up putting them on there eventually.  It's not on top of my to-do list though.  It will be a pain to change the spark plugs, but I can put up with it for the time being.

Not to hijack your thread man, but I have a questions regarding the O2's. I'll soon be working on my TT setup also, hopefully in spring break. Now, I have a 95 cougar, not a mustang, but's its still a ford, anyways. After my manifolds, I have 4 O2's, of course two in the front and two in the back. Do I also need to relocate my sensors?? All four or just the front two??

I got in on the g/p.  Those are the "hardcore" headers, so they were a bit more Wink.

With the quality though, it's still a steal.  These suckers have nice, big flanges and are beefy as all hell.Cool

The 4.6 mustangs also have 4 O2's. I believe two only funtion at startup for emissions.  When they switch to an o/r setup, they will commonly throw a cel light, which is bypassed using mil eliminators.  I'd say that if you dont use them, you would get a constant cel light...although you may want to search into it a bit more.

I curently have a 03 explorer 4.6 engine on my 95 cougar, which is the same engine as the stang, but the explorer has an aluminum block. I know that the first 2 O2's regulate the fuel mixture, and the back two dont do shit, so prolly I'll need to relocate the O2's but like you said, I'll need to read a lil bit more..

Millhouse, when you get to it can you keep us postedwith pictures on where you plan on moving all those wires and how you did it? I really can't find anything like that in the search.

Well, I've got half of the cold side done.  I must say that compared to the hot side...it was a piece of cake.  And I allways thought that it was going to be more difficult.

Anywho, heres some pics of the cold side and my intercooler.

Dont mind the welds, I switched the gas mixture and was dialing in my wire feed.

Next weekend I'll hook up most of the silicone reducers and couplers, and fab up the rest of the cold side.

Is this car an LX? I'm interested in how that IC will fit if it is indeed an LX, mine isn't coming out that great, but I have a/c.
