ah, 42's arent overkill.. hell, i ran 42's on my N/A302 for a while and it idled/ran fine. Its all in the MAF and tune as to how the car will run.

Either way, its better to go larger the first time around then to have to buy agian when you need to step up. IMO 42's are a good all around injector, plus they are the same price as 36's, so why not.

Find the section I did on fuel requirements and go to the link that calculates your needed fuel injector size.  I specifically used 440bhp as the example, and it comes down to right at 39-42#/hr.

The "other" thing in addition to a MAF, 255lph pump, and 42# injectors would be some form of EEC tuning.  Yeah, that's electrical, but it controls the pulse width and tuning in place of an FMU, so I lump it in with the fuel system requirements.

I see a lot of talk about making sure the MAF is calibrated to the injector size. My question is do you have to run a MAF or can I keep the stock Speed Density set up I have on the car now??  This could be an important issue for some of the earlier foxes and other fords that people are trying to turbo.

Thanks for putting up with a new kid's questions and comments!

OK then, my bad.  I remember reading somewhere that 42#ers were good up to around 500-520 flywheel HP.  Also, using http://www.mustangworks.com/analyzer.html I just input 450HP at 12psi of turbo boost and it came up with 35lb/hour.  I had another website that listed injector power capability but I must have erased it, I'm sure thats where I originally saw the rating.  I believe 36# injectors were supposed to be good up to about 460-480hp.

That calculator appears to have used a BSFC of about .5 with a pulsewidth of .8 or a pulse width of .95 with the BSFC of .6.  Anyway you look at it, there is only one equation to figure out your needed injector size, and I listed it above.  If you want to play with the pulse width or the BSFC in the EEC code, then yes, the smaller injectors can work with little to no room to grow.

I'm not trying to be an a$$ about it.

No no, I dont take it that way at all and I'm not trying to be an ass about it either.  I'm just pointing out that I had seen those figures somewhere and I should have mentioned I found that calculator through a quick search on google.  Either way, I think this is a great thread and in no way would I try to uncredit you.  If you ask me, this thread should be a sticky with none of the accolades and irrelevant posts (like this one Grin) under it, only posts that actually contribute to the original topic.

this should definately become a sticky at the top of each section with big neon lights and dancin' girls around it. that answered most questions i had spent 2 months looking for, trying to research and get answered. this is an awsome site and i agree that you should have a fair amount of knowledge of what you want to do before you even start to post here. the part about buying the books was the best. i dont think some people in this age even know where to buy books.

Great thread.  I'm of course a newbie, but not new to the turbo world.  When i get back from Iraq, i am going to be embarking on my own turbo kit.
This has been very helpful and very informative.  I have read a few turbo books and this seems to be pretty damn close to what they are saying, in a far easier to read more condensed form.

Now something i rarely see mentioned is header, exhaust and ducting tuning.  I'd like to see some more of this mentioned.

it seems to be a heated debate on whether this nets many gains, but from what i ahve seen its what makes some turbo kits more efficient than others.

Also you didnt mention the electrical types of intercooling such as the killer chiller by kincaid perf.  http://www.killerchiller.com

The other thing i'm going to do is build my own intake manifold.
We could start another thread for this discussion tho.  Keep up the excellent posting.  Thanks for all of your help

What's up bro!  I'm a Naval Aviator.  I was in OEF as a Desert Duck (land based in Bahrain), but I got switched to shore duty before I could get in on OIF.  I truely envy you and your compatriots.  Stay safe!!!

I didn't include anything in my write up that I didn't (don't) know about, or anything that took more than a single post worth of write up (I could have wrote two pages worth of info on water injection, but that is WAAAAAAAAAAAAYYY  past  "getting started" which is the topic of this thread.)

Thanks for the compliment.

Well im just a lowly mechanic, SIR;  HH-60 eng specialist.  Its no fun being over here, its just getting shot at and returning fire...

well, maybe i shall have to start another thread to emcompass the rest.

2 pages on water injection, i think at some point you would end up repeating yourself.  Of course then you can get into spraying intercoolers too.

I suppose i'll talk to ya later,

I was slightly exaggerating Wink.  There's a guy on the Yahoo JYturbo group that is making his own circuits and what not for a water injection setup.

Here's a link to that site:
