Heh heh, you sound like me talking about not "disturbing the magic". Only problem is i already disturbed it by removing one piston to take a peek. So what about gapping new rings plenty big and giving it plenty of bearing clearance? The crank really does need a polish as i rattled it pretty good on its last track run. By the time it smooths up im betting its gonna be a nice .003 main clearance and .0025 rods. Im thinking a little love might not be a bad thing as long as the new rings take a good seal to the used bore ok. Thats the only uncontrollable factor with a freshen up but then again. . . . . . like it even matters. If you just have to do it, then gap the rings at .040" top and .050" second, and make sure you use cheap cast rings like Sealed Power p/n E251X. "Hone" it by hand using 400-grit sand paper and ATF to induce a "quality" cross-hatch. .003"-.0035" on the bearing clearance all the way around. You'll have a pure race motor on your hands then.

Whaaaaaat? No kidding? I had no idea! Thanks for the heads up! My kid AJ has a learners permit right now and quite honestly, since the car came out of a field (where it rotted for 15 years) and has no title yet. I got it pre-inspected to make sure it wasnt stolen but a title cant be issued till all the major parts are there. Seats, motor, trans and driveline have to be accounted for. The car came back clean so we built it up and now i have to take it back to get a title issued and prove we bought all the parts. Been so busy working and moving to a new house that its been sitting up in the air on a hoist for weeks now being ignored. And yes, my kid has ants in his pants to drive it so i should quit torturing the poor kid and get the paperwork done. He will daily drive it to high school but plans are to look for a small 4WD truck as a more practical ride for winter and full time use. Plus he has already been "educated" on the fact that his Chevelle will most likely be broken a lot from beating the hell out of it all the time. Did i tell you guys what it ran in the 1/4 mile yet? He agreed to let me drive it down the track for the first time since he had to know what it ran. I thought that was kind of a sacred thing for a kid to drive his own car on its first passes but his choice. LOL On street skins, 3.36 gears and junky 305 heads it went 13.97 @ 101. Not too bad and probably just right for a young whippersnapper to learn how to handle a pretty fast car. A 70 chevelle that runs 13's at 100+ for a first car! No wonder he has ants in his pants. You've achieved near-mythical status in CC's eyes, they listed the owner as "Son of Stromberger"

Hmmm....Still aint got my copy yet! I got two new toys though....The headers I got yesterday at a carshow for $150 as they were putting them away....Great for a flipped deal. I am using them for my next setup. The truck I got a little while back, it was traded to me along with $500 cash for my 70' C-10....This truck is a 350, non granny gear 5 speed with a 4" lift aluminum wheels and 33x12.50 tires and its loaded with options.
I am enjoying driving that big sucker...

Nice! those headers work perfect flipped with a pair of chineese turbos slapped on. Too bad they are coated as you gotta do some welding on them.

IDK yet.....
The thought has crossed my mind a dozen times already....I dont know if those headers will fit a 95' 350....I know a 95' LT-1 uses a different spacing on the exhaust port and normal manifolds or headers wont fit. But I dont know about the truck engines.
I also have a set of World Products Sportsman II heads that are sweet....Dont know if they would be able to replace the centerbolt valve cover heads with a traditional style deal and utilize the roller cam.... I have seen convert the TBI trucks to Tune Port by using the batch fire wiring and computer to wire up all the individual injectors using the stock computer...Just have to have the right Ohms injector and lots of splicing of the wires.
The truck has a 3.42 gear and with the 5 speed doesnt turn alot of RPM's...Perfect for that current 67mm turbo I have on the Monte Now....But I dont know if the fuel pump or anything like that could hang. I think its only a 9-13 psi pump.
But a 4X4 truck turbo'd would be really cool. Right now I couldn't afford to start doing a new turbo set-up on yet another vehicle....So my main plan was to use the headers on the monte with my 76 q-trim Precision turbo I got. Upgrade from my 67mm

A '95 350 has standard GenI heads, so the exhaust ports will be regular ole SBC. The Sportsman II heads will also bolt on because nothing changed in that area until the Vortec heads in '96. Valve covers are valve covers, run whatever the head needs. Splicing wires sucks, so I'd probably go blow through on that, and since it's a 5spd you don't have to worry about an electronics tranny. Shit wasn't as crazy strong back then so things like the tranny and transfer case will be your weak link. The NV3500 (I assume that's what it has) is a pretty strong tranny, but you can't go balls out with a turbo and not figure something in the driveline is gonna let go. Make the Monte faster, cuz Montes rule!

Yeah, Cool the heads are the same for the exhaust!
The Tranny is the NV3500 I heard it was weak, Maybe as far as 4x4 beating on it or something...I dont plan to wheel it besides snow and pulling a car trailer from time to time. Maybe a nice dirt hill climb or drive it through one of my dads fields on the farm. But no mudding or crazy crap.
The Monte is my test bed car....I plan to make it the mule for 99% of turbo stuff I mess with. I might use the leftovers to turbo a truck in a few years...ETC.
As long as its all SBC stuff I'm good to go. Too bad the fuel pump boss aint drilled so I can use the Racepump on my truck.....I know alot of folks dont seem to like that pump but I never had a ounce of trouble with it. Oh Well.
I plan to make the truck even prettier than it is. It needs one spot on the drivers door painted and the passenger cab corner needs a patch. But otherwise the truck is rust free and clean as a pin. No dents besides one minor one on the passenger side of the front bumper.
I am used to driving cars so this truck sitting up high enough that I cant just step into it...Is pretty cool. I have to jump up a few inches to get in this thing. The headlights really piss off the slow pokes driving in front of me at night...HEHEHE
The tires suck a bit....I might put more of a AT tire on it instead of the MT's BFG AT's are pretty sharp and not too bad price wise. (When I get some more cash) these current tires make all kinds of noise and ride rough since they are HD truck tires. 6 ply. Heck the truck is only a 1/2 ton. Dont need those HD tires.

I am so looking forward to seeing this sucker roll again. I think i nice 200 shot with your 24 lbs of boost would be a fun one to watch. Maybe it is time to up that cage and add a shoot since your pushing past 150 now. Lets go for broke.

Maybe it is time to up that cage and add a shoot since your pushing past 150 now. Lets go for broke. I sent an E-mail to Car Craft to see if they want it for free to dyno with a Wrench Rat turbo system bolted to it but no reply yet. My car isnt legal for what it ran before so maybe somw hard dyno numbers would be the thing to do. And prove it does what i said it did. If they dont bite, then i'll throw it back in the Trans Am and go for broke with big nitrous and chassis dyno numbers. After all, i know how to put the wickedest tune on that baby this side of the Missisippi! Im gonna need a flak jacket, some duct tape. . . . . . . .and a couple of beers to pull it off. Oops almost forgot, a bag of kitty litter so the dyno shop doesnt get too at me.

I had a little fun with the Trans Am last night. I gotta get pix posted of the car with these new rims i got. They are Foose 18 inch Legends that are chrome plated and the wheels actually go on my yellow convertible. I got a wild hair last night and realized they fit the T/A perfectly! It looked so damn good i decided to hit the race track in pure street trim and see what it could do! Them Toyo Proxes aint too bad for tracyion as i got a 2.001 60 ft time leaving at 2000 rpm on the transbrake, ran 11 lbs boost and went 11.69 @ 127 mph! I tried 13 lbs boost and promptly blazed the tires in mid 2nd gear. LOL They just wouldnt hold anymore than mid 11's but i thought i did pretty good for lame ass street tires and 92 pump.

Heck yeah, Thats cool. I saw the chevelle in the CC this month finally...I didnt look too long....I had to check out the chicks in the Swimsuit issue...
That long legged brunette with her hair up is insanely hot!
I put some brand new BFG 275/60/15's on the back of my Monte friday and drove it for the first time without a swaybar....I live with it. It floats like a caddy. Bodyrolls not too bad.
I got on it hard from a roll 4-5 times the other night and the tire spin is much less. The car yanks the nose up high now right off the bat and feels like it pulls even harder than ever before. Now that the car transfers weight I'm thinking about another trip to the track.
I got my off idle stumble fixed too....It twas just the linkage for the Accel pump was out of whack. the lever for the diaphragm was under the bolt with the spring but the bolt was cocked a little bit and the bolt was sliding off the lever and the spring was eventually catching the lever. So right off idle there was no accel pump but by 1/2 throttle there was. LOL. Took 2 seconds to fix it once I saw the issue.

Hey everyone, you guys need to check out the newest Car Craft. They have a turbo pushing a Pontiac 400 all stroked out with a Rochester carb, dual plane intake, factory exhaust manifolds. All told it was only making 500 horse, but the torque was crazy 700 plus lbs-ft at 3900 rpm, and they think it mighta been over 800 lbs even lower but couldnt comfirm it. Nothing crazy just a lil poke and stroke with boost and all the wrong parts. dang. Funny I was seeing all this cause the other day I was just wondering about the Grenade, and well kinda curious if you might be able to replicate what ya did power wise with out fuel injection. Just another idea I was curious if you might be interested in trying. How has the mag idea going?

blowing through a rochester quadrajet huh??? You dont hear that too often but I have heard a couple like that. Which (month) CC issue was it? My subscription ran out and I signed up again but I may have missed an issue. Last one I got was the swimsuit issue one...... yes very hot chicks, better that their normal ones showing off the Tee's. I dont want to miss that artical. Might have to buy one or two until my subscription kicks back in. One of these days I want to turbo my 78 Z28. Hopefully over the winter.

I have a update on my Stock engined turbo Monte.... I put the 3.42 gear in the car and replace the stock axles with Moser street axles with C-Clip eliminators.
I went to the track Saturday and made three passes....Only three because the brand new axle c-clip set-up from moser failed on the passenger side....Only about 100 miles on it total it completely failed....And Moser is who pressed the bearings on and assembled the axle...All I did was bolt it in.
I'm pissed at Moser bigtime...And I will make sure everyone hears about it.
Anyway. The first pass on 10-12 pounds of boost with BFG Radial T/A tires was 13.45 @ 105.5 MPH and that was with a 2.206 60' time Very cold track surface and the tires were at 36 psi. The car pulled very hard once it hooked up somewhere in 2nd gear.
But I gotta fix the rear now. There would have been more passes with changes had the axle not failed.

Does he describe any of the Q-jet mods to make it go. I saw a guide back a long time ago, it looked super simple actually. supposedly you can run a fuel bowl on one out pretty easily however.

I must apologize to Moser, It sounds more like a Install induced failure than a bad product. I am told to check the remaining length of tube cuttoff the housing end.
I remember the shop that installed the gear & axles had done a nice job with the gear and the drivers side tube looked nice. The passenger side tube looked a bit hacked and chewed on, and it was angled.....Moser says that angle could possibly be exactly why it failed. I have to pull it apart and check it tonight.
So now my beef is more with the shop that installed it all....

That was a pretty interesting article. Its insane how much torque turbos make on a big inch off breed motor! I dont think Car Craft is interested in the Grenade unfortunately. Steve Berg (wrench rat) talked to him and i forget the exact reason they werent interested. I think it had something to do with another dyno mule being built and sponsored by one of the big companies and the fact the Grenade might embarass it and not help aftermarket parts sales. LOL I forget the details but it was some kind of conflict. I honestly have no idea what to do with it but id love to see it thunder again! How bout one of you guys buy it cheap and we give the money to flyinhillbilly? When i looked into it, shipping was around 300 bucks cross country and id sell it for 200 bucks. 500 dollars make you holler! C'mon boys, who's buying it?

You can find that article on the car craft website in the tech section. It didnt give specifics how they did it, other than to say they had to stagger the jetting for the duel plane intake. I wish I had the bucks for that motor Marty, but at this time I dont gotta job. GM laid me off at the truck plant that they have here in my town. I miss that overtime.

Man this economy blows. I feel bad for you guys losing your jobs and hope you find something that keeps the bills paid. I feel pretty lucky to still have work to do as my job is based entirely on peoples hobbies. Building hot rod stuff for people is something you wouldnt think of as stable money but it hasnt slowed down at all! I figured when people have to cut back expenses, things like a car hobby would get nipped in the ass but so far so good.
