HTH I could not agree more...... I blew a crap load of HGs in the begining. Before I had a knock guage. This is why I have a Casper Knock guage, Sensor and Spark control Module for a Buick in my car. I left the EGT and such long ago and only worry if I am detonating or not. If I get knock I have gone too far and I back something off. I learned a lot when I had my Buick and I apply a lot of it to my 'Stangs. So far 10.74 on 10psi and Pump gas is what I have done with no knock. A/F ratios dont make enignes safe, lack of detonation does. So many people ask, "Do you have a A/F ratio or wideband on your car." And when I say "No" they give, me this funny look like I have kooties and ask "Why not?" "Then I say "Who gives a shit what the A/F ratio is, if it's not detonating and it runs the number what good does it do to know what the A/F ratio is?" "Does it make it go any faster knowing what it is?" A/F ratio is a number, in otherwords, a end to a means, not a means to an end. Point is, the two things you are going for is max power and no detonation, the rest is all crap.

What have I started.. Buick parts on a Mustang Is that a Butang or a Buford? Years ago we were putting 9 inch rears on Buicks.. now were putting Buick knock sensors on Mustangs. Hey its solid advice. How else do 2 bolt block, cast crank, cast rod motors(Buick).. stay together at high HP. Keep em out of knock. I blew up 5 motors(Chevy) before I learned about controlling knock. Hell this current car(TTA) has over 700 passes+street play.. original bottom end. Its not that fast yet, I ran 11.249 at 122 with a 1.68 60 foot driven to track on pump gas two weeks ago. Should run 10.7-10.8's on the bone stock short block(cept cam) pretty soon.. the heat is killing me HTH

Knock sensors are great, if you can use them. I run a J&S knock sensor on my engine, but due to the big solid roller cam, etc. it falses a lot. It does have an adjustable sensitivity. Using that, knowing when it likes to false (like when letting off the throttle), using the A/F ratio, checking the plugs, and listening closely has been the best way for me to tell if it is knocking or not.

We too get false knock. My tranny when it "hits" second spikes the hell out of the knock sensor.
If the knock starts to escalate.. then its real. If it just BAM happens.. then its false.
Middle of a gear pull I look at the activity and can tell if its pinging.
